About this church
St. James Catholic Church has stood on East Hill for more than a century as a landmark of Catholic worship, parish life, education, and service in Vernon.
The church was built between 1908 and 1910 on land donated by pioneer rancher Cornelius O'Keefe, replacing a smaller wooden church from 1896 that the congregation had outgrown. Designed by James Barnet in the Gothic Revival style and built of rusticated concrete block, it rises 100 feet over the neighbourhood, with lancet windows, a rose window, and a bell bought from France in 1902 that commemorates eighteen Vernon pioneers.
St. James is the seat of parish life for the Vernon area. The parish office, daily Mass, weekday Adoration, and Saturday confessions are all here, and St. James School has been part of the parish family since 1956. The church was formally recognized on Vernon's Community Heritage Register in 2000 and listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places in 2010.
